The Standard Model

The Standard Model is our most comprehensive data management environment to date, allowing virtually any collections data to be recorded and managed in Axiell Collections out-of-the-box, that is, without the need for customization. This highlights a key driver behind the development of the Standard Model: an ongoing strategy to reduce reliance on Axiell DesignerClosed A tool for designing, creating, customizing and managing Axiell Collections applications and databases, broadly speaking, the Axiell Collections Model Application. As well as managing databases, including user access and permissions, Designer is used for such tasks as translating field labels, tooltips, values in drop lists, etc. for the configuration and customization of Axiell Collections.

Axiell Designer is a tool for Application Administrators, enabling the design, creation, customization, and management of Axiell Collections applications and databases (screens and fields). It is primarily used for the administration and configuration of the Model Application. Beyond managing databases, including user access and permissions, Axiell Designer facilitates tasks such as translating field labels, tooltips, and values in drop-down lists. While a dedicated tool for Administrators may always be required by some institutions for managing certain advanced features of applications and databases, each iteration of the Model Application aims to reduce reliance on Axiell Designer by shifting administration, configuration and customization out of Axiell Designer and into the Axiell Collections application itself. Model Application 5.2, for instance, allows users to upload their own templates as output formatsClosed An Output format is an XSLT style sheet or Microsoft Word or Excel template that specifies what fields are included in a report or printed output, and how the data is laid out and styled. for printing and reporting purposes, something that previously required Axiell Designer. As mentioned above, the Standard Model reduces the need for customization of the application in the first place by significantly increasing the number of fields available out-of-the-box:

The Standard Model also introduces a range of tools (in the form of data sourcesClosed The management of a collection can involve a vast amount of information about objects / items / books, people and organizations, events, administration and more. This information is stored as records in data sources. Each data source stores a specific type of information: details about collection items, people, events, loans, and so on.) that enable Application Administrators to manage some system configurations and customizations within Axiell Collections rather than Axiell Designer:

You will find a description of key features and improvements introduced with the Standard Model below.

The many changes introduced with the Standard Model are documented across four broad categories, with a fifth catching features that don't fit neatly into the other categories. Details about each of the key changes introduced with the Standard Model will be found in the appropriate section of this Help. Below you will find, at the very least, a summary of each change and a link to full details:

Fields, panels and read-only records

A description of new and changed features affecting multiple data sources: fields, panels and read-only records.

Data sources

The Standard Model improves some existing data sources and introduces new data sources to Axiell Collections.

Some changes are designed to enhance data and collections management, while others enable Application Administrators to configure aspects of the system without needing to use Axiell Designer, making for a more self-contained collections management system. Amongst other changes, you will find that the Thesaurus has been expanded and split into two parts, Thesaurus and System Links, and Exhibitions is now Exhibitions and venues. You will also find a new category of data source, Items, which sits between the Catalogue and data sources like Loans and holds granular detail about collection items involved in a particular activity, a loan or exhibition for instance.

Standard permissions model

The Standard Model introduces a user management model out-of-the-box with a base set of predefined roles and permissions governing access to advanced and administrator functionality, as well as access to fields containing sensitive data and Personally Identifiable Information (PII), such as personal address fields and email fields.
